Killeen Epoxy Flooring has quoted epoxy flooring in Fort Hood for more than twenty years, and this page has to open differently from every other page on this site. Most of our location pages start with a homeowner and a garage. Here the homeowner has almost no one behind him, and pretending otherwise would waste your time and ours.
What exists instead is a substantial, well-funded floor market that is reached through a contracting channel rather than through a phone call. Barracks, motor pools and shop bays on this installation are coated under federal contract, and the coatings scope inside them is subcontracted rather than sold. Establishing which of those two worlds a question belongs to is the first thing we do.
The second thing we establish is what the slab is sitting on, because the ground under this installation is not one ground. The published soil survey changes classification inside the fence line, and the difference between the two map units is roughly threefold in seasonal movement. That decides the crack detail on a floor here far more than the product on a data sheet does.
Why there is almost no private garage floor work here
Nine owner-occupied homes in the whole place
The American Community Survey records nine owner-occupied housing units in the entire Fort Hood CDP, against 5,250 renter-occupied, out of 5,259 occupied units. That is two tenths of one percent. It is not a small homeowner market; it is, for practical purposes, the absence of one.
A garage floor coating is normally a permanent alteration commissioned by the person who owns the house. Families living in quarters here do not own them and cannot authorize permanent work on them, so the ordinary residential sale that the rest of this site is built around has almost nobody on this ground to make it to.
The floor changes when the housing program says it changes
On-post family housing is operated by Lendlease Communities as Cavalry Family Housing, under a fifty-year ground lease the Army granted in October 2001 — the first privatized military housing community under the Residential Communities Initiative. Lendlease is responsible for maintenance, property management, and all new construction and renovation of the residences.
So the renter share of 99.8 percent does not describe an ordinary landlord market either. A floor in one of those units is replaced or recoated when Lendlease’s own program schedules it, on Lendlease’s procurement, and not when a resident decides they would like one and starts calling contractors.
Housing that is attached rather than detached
The property form here also runs the opposite way to an ordinary Texas city. Single-family attached units are 66.1 percent of the stock and detached only 19.2 percent, with 14.0 percent in structures of two or more units. Read as a labeled proxy for garage stock — attached-garage share is an American Housing Survey item and is not published at place level — that points toward shared-drive, single-bay and carport geometry rather than the two-car attached bay.
That has plain consequences for a quote. A single bay off a shared drive gives a crew less staging room, a shorter run of slab to profile and a neighbor’s vehicle to work around, and the vacancy across the cantonment reflects a population cycling on assignment orders rather than a housing market turning over.

The floors worth having here are let by federal contract
Barracks renovation runs as a gut and rebuild
The Directorate of Public Works Engineering Division has renovated 59 of the 99 barracks on this installation over roughly twelve years, and the scope on those buildings is not cosmetic. One award ran 59 million dollars for three buildings as a complete gut and rebuild, taking electrical, plumbing, fire protection and HVAC back to nothing, and a 74 million dollar modernization project began with demolition in July 2026.
A floor inside that scope is not a standalone job. It arrives with a specification already written, a submittal package attached to it, a substrate already demolished back to slab, and a sequence that puts the coating between two other trades’ milestone dates.
Motor pools are their own category
Motor pool renovation on this post runs at roughly 10 million dollars per motor pool, and recently renovated 1st Cavalry Division facilities had building height raised to take larger vehicles. Thirteen motor pools used by the 1st Cavalry Division and the 3rd Cavalry Regiment were assessed as impossible to renovate and are to be demolished and rebuilt instead.
Those are the most demanding slabs anyone would ask us to coat here. Heavy wheeled traffic, dropped tooling, fuel, hydraulic fluid and steam cleaning point at urethane cement or a high-build 100 percent solids epoxy with a real aggregate broadcast, not at a decorative flake floor with a thin topcoat over it.
How a coatings crew actually reaches that work
None of it is reached by marketing. Work of that size is let as a federal prime contract, and a coatings contractor gets to the floor as a subcontractor to the prime who holds it. The relationship that matters is with the general contractor and the construction manager, not with the people who will eventually walk the building.
We say that plainly because the alternative is a page implying you can call us and have a barracks floor coated next month. If you hold or are bidding a prime here, we will price a scope and name the product, the system build and the finished mil thickness, so what was quoted can be checked against what went down. If you live here, the honest answer is the section above.
Two soils under one post, and three times the movement between them
Topsey clay loam at the cantonment
SSURGO at the cantonment maps Topsey clay loam, 3 to 8 percent slopes, severely eroded, with Topsey at 85 percent of the map unit — a fine-loamy carbonatic Udic Calciustept, well drained, 25 to 37 percent clay, plasticity index 18 to 20, and linear extensibility of 1.9 to 3.1 percent.
On the standard reading of linear extensibility that is a low to moderate shrink-swell soil. A slab on that ground still cracks, because every slab does, but its cracks are far more likely to be shrinkage and early settlement that has finished moving than a joint reopening with each wet and dry season.
Slidell silty clay, a few miles away
A few miles from the cantonment the same survey maps Slidell silty clay, 0 to 2 percent slopes, with Slidell at 85 percent of the map unit — a fine smectitic Udic Haplustert, which is to say a true Vertisol. It runs 45 to 50 percent clay, a plasticity index of 33 to 40, and linear extensibility of 7.5 to 9.7 percent.
That is high to very high movement by any standard classification, and roughly three times what the cantonment map unit carries. Two buildings on this installation can sit a short drive apart with that much difference in seasonal behavior in the ground beneath them.
What that changes in a specification
A coating is a bonded film a few thousandths of an inch thick. It follows the slab it is stuck to, and nothing we install will stop, bridge or absorb ground movement. Anyone telling you a floor coating protects against substrate movement is making a claim the material cannot support.
So on the high-movement side a crack is treated as a joint that is still working: routed out, filled with a semi-rigid polyurea joint filler and carried through the coating as a joint, with the warning given before the job that it can telegraph again. On the low-movement side the same crack is much more often a repair that stays repaired. Reading the map unit before quoting a crack detail is a real step here, not a rhetorical one.
Getting a crew and a grinder trailer through the gate
Passes, vetting and REAL ID
Access governs the schedule before anything about the floor does. Every vehicle occupant aged 18 and over needs a valid DoD ID card or an Installation Access Pass, and non-DoD applicants are vetted against FBI criminal and terrorist authoritative databases before a pass is issued.
Implementation of the REAL ID Act began May 7, 2025, so every crew member needs a REAL ID-compliant credential or an approved alternative such as a U.S. passport, a military ID or an Enhanced Driver’s License. The Marvin Leath Visitors Welcome Center, Building 69012 on T.J. Mills Blvd, issues long-term passes valid up to 90 days, and that 90-day pass is what makes a multi-week floor job practical at all.
Commercial vehicles do not use the passenger gates
All commercial vehicles enter through the North Clarke Road Access Control Point Truck Inspection Facility for inspection and vetting. A grinder trailer, a shot blaster, a dust collector or a materials truck goes through truck inspection every time it comes on, not once at the start of the job.
That is a real block of time at the front of every mobilization day, and it belongs in the schedule rather than being discovered on the first morning. It is also why we do not carry an access line on a job that never needed one — a residential floor off post goes through an ordinary municipal building department, needs no gate pass, no vetting and no truck inspection, and we do not bill for access we did not use.
Who can be on the crew, and the name on the gate
Crew composition is constrained here in a way it is nowhere else in this trade area. Foreign nationals without official business require sponsorship by a DoD ID cardholder and cannot come on unescorted, holders of limited-term driver’s licenses need a sponsor present, and anyone who fails vetting can only apply through an access denial waiver decided by the installation commander. On a trade whose labor pool commonly includes non-citizen workers, that settles who is on the job before it settles anything about the floor.
One last thing, because stale paperwork gets it wrong constantly. The installation was redesignated in May 2023 and redesignated again by an order signed June 11, 2025, with the ceremony held July 28, 2025, this time honoring Col. Robert B. Hood, a World War I Distinguished Service Cross recipient.
Fort Hood is the current and correct name. The housing portfolio did not change back with it: it was renamed Cavalry Family Housing after the 1st Cavalry Division in May 2023 and remains so.
